The first Overwatch world champion is determined
The first winner of Overwatch World Cup
The finals of the international Overwatch tournament called Overwatch World Cup were held during Blizzcon, October 4-5, 2016.
The most interesting of the group stage happened in the Group D, where there were whooping 3 tiebreaks to determine the leader of the group. This time it was the Chinese team to emerge victoriously.
The teams from Thailand, Singapore, Chile, Germany, Taiwan, Austria, Brazil, and Canada did not manage to progress from the group stage. The Korean team showed the best result and set a record by not losing a single map – a result other participants failed to achieve.
The teams from France, Spain, the USA, and China left the competition in the first round of the playoffs. The semi-final matches were held between Russia and Finland on the one hand and between Korea and Sweden on the other one. Russian and Korean teams won semi-final matches with a score 2-0. Based on the loser’s match, the Finns took the fourth place, and the Swedes took the third place.
The Korean team managed to maintain its record result by not losing a single map – their score was 6-0 in the group stage and 4-0 in the playoff matches. The Russian team failed to make a miracle, and like all other opponents of the Koreans, they were not able to win a single match in the final BO7 series.
Thus, the Korean team is not only the first ever world champion in the history of Overwatch, they also set a record others probably won’t be able to surpass in the years to come.
